L'Etape du Tour

I'm in Argeles-Gazost in the foothills of the Pyranees at the moment.

I'm doing this on Sunday: http://www.rapha.cc/index.php?page=490

I'm actually feeling good. They'll be 8,500 other riders on the day. It could get messy.

The lunatics *are* running the asylum

Check this out, "US chain drops 'terror scarf' ad". Apparently the use of the scarf implies some kind of terrorist link according to Michelle Malkin, whoever she is.

I actually feel sorry for Dunkin' Donuts in all this. They are just trying to sell fat, crappy food to people (as is their right) and then this lady gets involved and ruins all their plans.

I love their tag line "Something fresh is always brewin' here". You're telling me.

T-Mobile... Get a bloody grip will ya!

I'm a T-Mobile US hotspot customer. It was useful when they had the Starbucks deal. They've since lost it to AT&T but I paid a year in advance for a cheaper deal so I've still got it.

I would say that T-Mobile lost it in more ways than one. They own their own public Wi-Fi network and they own one in the UK too. Yet here I am in London and they want me to pay $0.18 per minute ($10.80 per hour) to "roam". Give me a bloody break will you.

That's why I recommend everyone gets a 3G dongle (try 3 in the UK & Ireland) and tell these guys to take a hike. Bunch of out-of-touch fools.

You have to love capitalism...

This is a great story. You couldn't make this stuff up.

More thoughts on Qik

I wrote about Qik a couple of months ago and I was fully intending to write something more detailed but luckily Bhaskar (Qik's CEO) posted this interview he did with me while we were in Barcelona at GSM World.

And a little Bhaskar factoid. He is an incredibly nice guy for whom I have an immense amount of time. However, I won't be sharing a room with him again. He has one of those snores that overwhelms even the most impressive set of earplugs. He's like a bloody 747 taking off ;-)

Time to buy Apple

iPod and iPhones aside the more I travel the more I see Apple PowerBooks all around me. I remember only a few years ago I was the only guy in the room with a Mac. Now, it seems everyone has one.

seatac.jpg

I'm just on the Wi-Fi at Seatac in Seattle and I notice on my network list that there are 6 other Mac's on the network. That's 60% of the total. Not scientific in the least but a real indication that more and more people are switching to the Apple platform.

It's a classic Peter Lynch moment. Maybe time to buy Apple stock.

In praise of...

...Kevin Kelly.

He really is one of the most interesting people on the Web. That, in of itself, is really why the whole thing is such a phenomena. In times past I would probably never have come across Kevin, or any of his writing. He has incredible insight, check this post out.

However, my favourite is his Cool Tools site. I have to admit to being a bit of a gadget junkie and this site more than satisfies my need with all the quirky things he uncovers.

QiK

If you've got a Nokia S60 handset (one of these) and a 3G account then head over to QiK and download their most excellent software. It's huge fun. Check it out:

I met Bhaskar from QiK recently at MWC in Barcelona. A very nice guy. I want to speak to him again when I see him in a few weeks. The social implications of QiK are massive actually but more of that later.

Au revoir Facebook

Happy New Year!

I've had enough of Facebook. It's a time drain, it's too trivial, I don't like having to conduct e-mail conversations within their environment and I particularly don't like what they've just done to Scoble.

I hated AOL and here I am using something that is really just a glorified update. I want an open system where the data I input always belongs to me and where I choose the communication method for my dialogue.

So tomorrow I'm going to wipe my data and suspend my account. I couldn't actually find a way to delete my account so if someone knows how please let me know.

Sandy is a winner

iwantsandylaunch.jpg

I'm always looking for new, and simple, ways to stay on top of things. Most things I try I dump pretty much as soon as I start as they just don't fit into the way I work.

Here is something that works really well for me. It's called IWantSandy. It's a web-based personal assistant. You can use it many ways but what I've found really handy is the ability to send an e-mail to Sandy whenever I need to remember something, or do something (she uses a simple shorthand). I have Sandy plugged into my iCal and the reminder just populates my calender. What a great tool.

Give it a go here...
